NJROTC Course Syllabus

COURSE TITLE:  Naval Science (NJROTC) 1-4

Books:  Cadet Field Manual, Cadet Reference Manual, NJROTC Introduction Book, Naval Science 2 (Maritime History and Nautical Sciences), and Naval Science 3 (Naval Knowledge and Skills).

NJROTC COURSE SYLLABUS 

Introduction

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the qualities of citizenship, the elements of followership and leadership, and the value of scholarship in attaining life goals. Students will become familiar with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Navy in general and the NJROTC program in particular. Cadets will develop a sense of pride in the organization through accomplishment.

JROTC’s mission is: “To instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment (National Defense Act of 1916)”.

Eastside’s NJROTC Unit’s mission is “To empower students/cadets to continue their education and achieve personal and team goals by providing an environment conducive to developing leadership skills, enhancing self- esteem, building confidence, self-discipline, and teaching skills that will help students become great American citizens.

Course Overview

Students will prepare for this course by using the following text books:  The Cadet Field Manual, and various Naval Science Textbooks.  Some examples of the subjects that will be covered in the NJROTC curriculum are:  Introduction to NJROTC, followership, leadership, organizational skills, time management, and team building, the History of Sea Power, Uniform regulations, awards, military customs/ceremonies and much, much more.  Students are required to participate in physical training and become proficient in close order drilling.

Activity Fee

$50.00 yearly activity fee is due by September 10, 2020.  The activity fee partially defrays the cost of tailoring shirts and pants, the purchase of name tags, shirt stays, and awards for competitions.  Please make checks payable to Eastside High School NJROTC or to pay your fees online visit the Eastside High School Website and click on the Webstore.

Physical Training Gear

Shirt and short cost is $20.00.  Unit issued PT gear and non issue sneakers are required for all cadets on Physical Training (PT) Friday.  Also, the NJROTC Drilling Unit travels to drilling and athletic competitions in Florida and unit PT gear is required for all drill team members.

 

Uniform Inspection

Uniform inspection is conducted on Wednesday for regular classes and either Wednesday or Thursday for block classes depending on which day you are required to come to class.  Shoe polish must be obtained by the cadet to shine their shoes. Dry cleaning is preferred with heavy starch. Shirt stays are required for all males and the grooming standards must be adhered to.

 Testing/Homework

Test and quizzes will be given during each nine-week grading period.

Homework should be turned in on the assigned due date.  Late work will not be accepted.

Classroom Participation

Students will be required to participate in all classroom activities.  This includes close order drilling, dressing out and participating in physical training on assigned days.

Final Examinations

According to school policy, each student is required to take a comprehensive final examination worth 20% of the semester grade.

All grades are calculated using the following categories and weights:

  1. Uniform Inspection 25%
  2. Tests and Quizzes 25%
  3. Physical Training 20%
  4. Drill and Ceremony 15%
  5. Class Participation 15%
